NEW! Portland, the City of Roses, a hub if international trade, and the gateway to a natural wonderland. Year after year, Portland has proven that a major West Coast city can be peaceful, clean, green and friendly. As Portland's 25 year vision plan notes "vibrant, diverse neighborhoods are home to all manner of people, but it's the abundance of unique cafes, restaurants, art galleries and retail shops, parks and sanctuaries that give this majestic town its soul."

Built on a European model, Portland is indeed a walker's paradise. The city streets feature statues, fountains and half-size city blocks. Some historians say that the shorter blocks were specifically designed so that more natural light would fall down to street level, others say it was designed by real estate designers who wanted to create more corner lots, which would fetch a higher price. However, Portland's districts do posses distinct personalities, unusual for a relatively small city. The artistic Pearl District, sophisticated Nob Hill and bohemian Hawthorne are just a few neighborhoods that consistently draw a crowd.

If you don't feel like walking, try Portland's public transportation it's both accessible and user-friendly. The Light rail trains (MAX), the Central City Streetcar and an easy-to-navigate bus system moves travelers through the town efficiently - and all offer free service within downtown Portland.

Crowning the city's skyline is Mount Hood, the tallest peak in Oregon's cascade Mountain range. Within the metro area there are 37,00 acres of parks and green spaces that include three distinct rose gardens featuring 560 varieties of blooms, the brand new Classical Chinese Garden and the nation's largest urban wilderness of nearly 5,000 acres of Forest Park. Visit the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Oregon City where living historic interpreters in period costumes spin tales of the pioneers who braved the Oregon Trail

You can find great shopping throughout Portland's many districts. Portland's Saturday and Sunday Markets located in the Cultural District in the South Park Blocks are the nation's largest open-air markets for handcrafted goods offering more than 250 crafts booths, international food and live entertainment. Remember, Oregon has no sales tax.

For more information or to plan your trip visit Portland's visitors web site at www.travelportland.com or stop by the Marriott's concierge desk where their experienced staff can point you in the right direction.

NEW! Wondering What to Pack? Get ready for a week of informative program sessions that reflect the needs of housing executives and commissioners. Business casual attire is fine.

Join us on Monday, May 7 for a special luncheon, as PHADA honors its 17th Annual Stephen Bollinger Scholarship Winner. Business casual would be appropriate.

Enjoy some of Portland's favorite cuisines and music at PHADA's closing dinner on Tuesday, May 8. Tuxedos and pearls are not required for a night out on the town in Portland, a pair of chinos and a dazzling smile will be welcomed.

Portland Weather. The average high temperature for May is 68°, average low is 47°, and although Portland gets less rain than Atlanta, Baltimore, Houston or Seattle, a travel umbrella is always a good idea.
