Bush Administration announces pick for Public Housing Assistant Secretary
The White House yesterday announced the nomination of Michael Minoru Fawn Liu as Assistant Secretary for Public Housing. Mr. Liu is currently employed as a Vice President with the Community Investment Department of the Federal Home Loan Bank in Chicago.
The nominee is not well known in public housing industry circles. However, PHADA has been able to gather some information over the last week. Mr. Liu is a former state representative from Hawaii. A lawyer by background, he served in the first Bush Administration in the early 1990s with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Mr. Liu also worked briefly for HUD in the Washington D.C. field office and was a Community Builder. A biography states he was born in 1953.
At this point, it is uncertain when Mr. Lui will assume his duties with HUD. He must first be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. It is unclear whether the Senate confirmation hearing will occur before the month-long August congressional recess. A HUD official told PHADA last week that the nominee might not begin working until September. Senate staff indicated to PHADA yesterday, though, that confirmation hearings were possible before August.
PHADA will report more information on the Liu nomination as it becomes available.
