PHADA Legislative Forum Home

This is an exciting and busy time in Washington as Congress moves closer to enactment of the FY 2011 HUD budget and considers major authorizing legislation ("PETRA") that could very well change the direction of the public housing program. There are a lot of possibilities and opportunities available for public housing which is why executive directors need to continue to send a strong message to Congress. PHADA continually urges its membership to contact their elected officials to discuss ways to help ensure adequate funding for public housing. And what better way to contact your elected representatives than by a face-to-face meeting? The 2010 Legislative Forum, which will be held just steps away from HUD headquarters, will focus on helping housing professionals visit Capitol Hill and HUD to meet with key housing policymakers. While the Board of Trustees and committee members are strongly encouraged to attend, PHADA invites all executive directors to participate in this timely two-day meeting.
PHADA/Rutgers Executive Director Education Program (EDEP) classes will be offered September 9-11 (see course schedule below).
PHADA committee members and trustees should plan on arriving in time for meetings that start Sunday morning, September 12.

PHADA/Rutgers University Executive Director Education Program (EDEP)

The PHADA/Rutgers University Executive Director Education Program (EDEP) will continue Sept. 9-11, 2010 in conjunction with the 2010 Legislative Forum. Two courses will be offered:

  • Public Relations - Thursday, September 9
When should a press conference be held? Who are the local media, and what do they want? This useful seminar addresses these questions and more ... including how to write and distribute press releases, how to develop a quality newsletter, how to improve the image of the housing authority, how to develop and maintain press contacts, and how to manage the media during a crisis.

  • Executive Housing Management - Friday, September 10 and Saturday, September 11 (2-day course)
This two-day program offers executive directors the opportunity to improve their administrative and leadership skills. Organizational and behavioral issues are analyzed in the context of the key functions of the position, including planning, staffing and managing. A case study approach is used to cover a wide array of topics, such as time management, performance appraisal, negotiation, conflict resolution, and team building.

EDEP registrants please note: On-site registrations are not accepted for the EDEP Program, and class size is limited to 40. Classes have been filling up, so early registration is recommended. You will receive confirmation of your EDEP registration from Rutgers University. If you do not receive a Rutgers confirmation, please contact the PHADA office at (202) 546-5445. Refunds will be issued only to registrants who withdraw on or before August 13, 2010.
