Announcing the 2019 PHADA Scholarship Program Winners
Osman Abdullahi, 2019 Stephen J. Bollinger Memorial Scholarship winner
PHADA is pleased to announce the winners of its annual Scholarship Program. Osman Abdullahi of Savage, MN, has been awarded the 2019 Stephen J. Bollinger Memorial Scholarship. A senior at Burnsville High School, Osman is a resident of the Scott County Community Development Agency (CDA). CDA’s Executive Director, William Jaffa, states that Osman is a “very intelligent, reliable, and dedicated student.”
In his accompanying essay, Osman writes that “being a young student who has lived in public housing my entire life, you become aware of financial circumstances…. Understanding that education would be my most available asset to climb out under the weight of financial hardships, I worked hard to excel in my studies.” Osman is a member of Burnsville High School’s National Honor Society and is currently a PSEO (Post Secondary Enrollment Opportunities) student at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities.
Kaitlyn Gardner, 2019 Freedom & Civil Rights Scholarship winner
PHADA’s 2019 Freedom & Civil Rights Scholarship has been awarded to Kaitlyn Gardner, a resident of the Housing Authority of the City of Dothan, AL. Kaitlyn high school US History Teacher, Angie Kinsaul, writes that Kaitlyn has always been “extremely mature for her age and as a result she is one of the students I can always call on to help me with any project…. Kaitlyn’s attitude makes her extremely well liked by all of the student body helping them to relate to her and making them more willing to help her.”
Lazavion Wesley, 2019 Mutual of America Life Insurance Company Scholarship winner
Through the generosity of our partner, Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, the 2019 Mutual of America Life Insurance Company Scholarship has been awarded to Lazavion Wesley. Lazavion is a resident of the Huntsville Housing Authority in Huntsville, AL. He is a student at Mae C. Jemison High School and participates in the National Honor Society, Student Government Association, Cap and Gown, and the Board Gaming Club. He plans to major in engineering when he starts college in the fall.
