At last month’s Legislative Forum, the Housing Committee held a detailed and productive discussion about HUD’s plans to overhaul the inspection process for assisted housing programs. Members continue to raise issues with the 14-day notification period as HUD’s and the inspectors’ inflexibility unnecessarily complicate and burden housing authorities. Members report apparent inconsistencies between the Department’s stated policy concerning scheduling and the practices of inspectors. (At a separate session during the conference, Assistant Secretary R. Hunter Kurtz agreed to clarify procedures for local field offices to assist with scheduling).
