PHADA members and staff were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Shauna M. Sorrells, who worked at HUD headquarters for more than a decade. She was 47 and died of an apparent heart attack.
Sorrells most recently served as the Chief Operating Officer at the Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) of Montgomery County, MD. Prior to joining HOC, she was the Director of the Office of Public Housing at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
During her tenure with HUD’s Office of Public Housing, Sorrells increased the number of vulnerable families housed in the program by 33,000. Drawing on her own personal history in public and subsidized housing, she also created new initiatives and partnerships to expand STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) resources and programming to women and underserved populations.
Sorrells held a Masters Degree in Public Policy from the George Washington University and had completed all requirements towards a doctoral degree (ABD). She earned her B.S. in Sociology from the University of Missouri in Kansas City, MO.
