President’s Forum: PHADA Rising in Phoenix

Join Us for a Timely Meeting in January

John Hodge, PHADA President

A new year – and new decade – is now just weeks away. Along with it, PHADA’s 2020 Commissioners’ Conference in Phoenix is right around the corner, too. The upcoming year is an important one as it relates to the federal government when all members of the House of Representatives, one-third of the Senate, and the presidency are at stake. It’s also a year in which the government will take the important decennial census, a process that has a significant effect on all our communities. All these factors, plus the normal every day turmoil confronting us, are more reasons why you and your commissioners should join PHADA in early January.

Some of the hot topics we’ll cover include the latest iteration of HUD’s proposed changes to the Annual Contributions Contract (ACC) as well as some of the re-positioning tools HAs may want to consider for recapitalizing their properties. These include RAD, the small HA voluntary conversion program, and updated demolition disposition procedures. We are also going to have some informative presentations on HUD’s proposed inspections changes through the NSPIRE initiative. We’re particularly pleased that the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Real Estate Assessment Center (REAC) David Vargas will join us to discuss NSPIRE.

As always, we have a solid curriculum for commissioners including sessions on financial oversight, procurement and redevelopment of public housing. As noted above, 2020 is a census year so we will have a professional from the Commerce Department discuss ways HAs can ensure their resident population is accurately counted, along with other ways HAs can use census information to their advantage.

The entire program is on the PHADA website. Please make sure to register soon because rooms are going fast and the discounted early bird fee expires on December 5.
