HUD Proposes New Rules for Faith Based Organizations

The Latest Step in a 19 Year Effort

On February 13, HUD published a proposed rule entitled “Equal Participation of Faith-Based Organizations in HUD Programs and Activities: Implementation of Executive Order 13831,” the latest in a string of rules and Executive Orders dating back to 2001 when the George W. Bush administration established a White House Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives. The current proposal is responsive to Executive Order 13831 establishing a White House Faith Based and Opportunity Initiatives. HUD’s Federal Register Notice of Proposed Rulemaking includes a detailed history of HUD regulations, Executive Orders, and Attorney General Memoranda related to religious organizations’ receipt of federal assistance since 2001.
