Congress Returns to Session With Shutdown Looming

Housing Funding Still Available Until Mid-November

Today, Congress returns from a week-long recess with a potential government shutdown looming. If both the House and Senate are unable to pass a continuing resolution before midnight on Tuesday, September 30, the federal government will shut down.

HUD staff have assured PHADA that, if a shutdown should occur, agencies should have sufficient public housing and Housing Choice Voucher funding to continue operations through mid-November. PHADA does not know if any shutdown would extend past that date. The longest that a government shutdown has ever lasted was 35 days.

The Association also understands that, should the Administration proceed with its proposed “Reductions in Force” layoffs that would coincide with a shutdown, HUD staff administering the public housing, HCV, and Multifamily programs are unlikely to be impacted. As of press time, the Department has not publicly commented on what, if any, Reductions in Force would occur.

PHADA will continue to keep members updated regarding the latest on HUD funding through social media, eBlasts, and the Advocate. Members with questions about the impacts of a shutdown should contact: policy@phada.org.
